Well, if we're going to get technical about it, claasicsl music is a catch-all term that gets applied to all sorts of music that isn't claasicsl. The classic era refers to late 18th/early 19th century music by composers like Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven. Bach, Brahms and Stravinsky aren't any more or less classic than Adams is. I think the distinction between classic and a classic is lost on a lot of people, which can lead to confusion.The name of our series is what it is because none of us involved could think of a better one. It was never intended to be a series that featured only warhorses that already sell plenty of tickets. The whole notion of an outreach/education series is to draw new audiences into the concert hall, and sticking exclusively with music written a hundred or more years ago is just way too narrow for any orchestra that actually hopes to still be around and relevant fifty years from now. Fifty years ago, a lot of audience members felt the same way about Stravinsky, Mahler, and Bartok that Elwood now feels about Adams. Times change, musicians (and audiences) move on and embrace new things unless, of course, we decide not to even give them the opportunity.
