Almost same experience here.I like monivg around with map by myself when I visit foreign countries.I can infer the meaning from alphbetic characters even in Latino countries.I know Chinese charactes so that I managed to guess the meaning in mainland China and Taiwan but not at all in Korea by the strange characters with no English subtitle.I felt even anxiety there because the high crime rate and wild nationality unlike Japan.
